Conference Information

Venue

The City of Cambridge is famous throughout the world for its University and colleges, retaining the ambience of an historic medieval town, while remaining a hotbed for some of the most recent scientific developments. It uniquely offers a combination of ancient heritage and modern facilities.

Centre for Mathematical Sciences

The Conference venue is the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, the award-winning buildings that have housed the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics since 2000. With its excellent facilities and good transport connections to international airports, the CMS has an excellent track record hosting international conferences. The address is:

Centre for Mathematical Sciences
University of Cambridge
Wilberforce Road
Cambridge CB3 0WA
Website: www.damtp.cam.ac.uk

Plenary lectures will be given in the morning and early afternoon in the main lecture hall (MR2) with lunches served upstairs in the central core (pictured below left), a pleasant setting for research interactions. Parallel sessions will take place in the afternoons in the adjacent lecture halls.

On arrival at the CMS site, please report to reception in the main central core (pictured right). To pinpoint the geographical location of the CMS within Cambridge, please refer to the local area maps below. You should approach the site on foot from a walkway that meets Clarkson Road next to the Isaac Newton Institute. Enter the main CMS courtyard through a gatehouse on the left as you proceed along the pathway and the central core will be directly in front of you.

conference participants will be housed nearby in Cambridge colleges. For local maps and further information refer to the Accommodation page, while transport instructions can be found under Travel.

We recommend that you follow the above links for precise travel directions, however, the summary below covers some useful basic information.

Air travel:

The main three international airports for England are Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, respectively west, south and north of London. Stansted is convenient for European flights and is located, like Cambridge, north of London - it is only 30 minutes travel time away from Cambridge. Stansted, in particular, is a major hub for budget airlines like Ryannair and EasyJet. Luton airport is also relatively convenient for Cambridge.

Travel to Cambridge by coach:

For those arriving at Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted then the coach is the simplest and cheapest way to travel to Cambridge. National Express coaches travel up to Cambridge at regular hourly intervals and deposit you in the centre of town at the Drummer Street bus station. Taxis can be found at an adjacent stand to take you to the CMS in west Cambridge. The scenic walk from the bus station takes about 20 minutes to CMS (without heavy bags).

Travel to Cambridge by train:

From Heathrow it is also possible to catch the Tube into the centre of London. From Gatwick you catch the train to the centre of London first then transfer to the Tube. In both cases take the underground to King's Cross or Liverpool Street stations for trains to Cambridge. You can also catch the train to Cambridge from Stansted but the service is not very frequent. The railway station in Cambridge is quite far south, so it is best to take a taxi from there to west Cambridge (or else a shuttle bus to the centre followed by a 20 minute walk to CMS).

Travel to Cambridge by car:

We regret that we cannot provide parking at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, except in special circumstances. There is a nearby Park & Ride on Madingley Road, about three-quarters of a mile from CMS. The site has 1000 parking spaces but does not provide long stay parking. Fares are between GBP 2.50 (day return)GBP 10.00 (weekly). They can be reached at +44 1223 845561. Limited free all-day parking can be found on Wilberforce Road.

The following car travel directions will get you to west Cambridge (we recommend you follow directions on the DAMTP website given above):

From the M11 (going North)

Exit at Junction 13. Turn right into Madingley Road. Follow the road down towards the City Centre. You will find Wilberforce Road (CMS entrance) as about the third turning on your right. There is no exit at Junction 13 on the M11 travelling South.

From the A428 (previously the A45 to and from the West)

Take exit marked for Cambridge and this will bring you down in to Madingley Road. Follow the road down towards the City Centre, following the above instructions from the junction with the M11.

From the City Centre

Wilberforce Road is the second turning on you left (for CMS) as you come out of Cambridge along the Madingley Road to the M11 and A428. The first junction is marked with traffic lights and the second with a traffic island in the middle of the road.

From the A14 (East) (previously the A45 to and from the East)

Take exit marked for Cambridge at Histon and this will bring you down to a large junction by a service station. Turn right and right again at the traffic lights on to the Huntingdon Road. Follow the road towards Huntingdon (past Murray Edwards (previously New Hall) and Fitzwilliam Colleges) turning left into Storey's Way. This junction is marked by a traffic island in the middle of the road and has the Cambridge Lodge Hotel (painted white wall) on the left-hand corner. Storey's Way has two sharp "dog- leg" bends the first to the left and the second to the right. After the second bend, pass the Churchill College buildings and at the end turn right into Madingley Road. For CMS, take the first left into Wilberforce Road.

From the A14 (North West) (previously known as the A604)

Follow the signs for Cambridge City Centre. This brings you down along the Huntingdon Road. Pass Girton College and NIAB on your left. Take the next right hand turning which is marked by a turning lane in the centre of the road with bollards and on the corner of Storey's Way is the Cambridge Lodge Hotel with a white wall. Follow along Storey's Way following the instructions as for "From the A14 (East)".
