The Centre for Theoretical Cosmology in Cambridge and the George P. & Cynthia W. Mitchell Institute for Fundamental Physics in Texas are jointly initiating a series of major international conferences on topics at the cutting edge of theoretical cosmology. The first such conference will be held at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge from August 20th-26th, 2006.
String and M theory provide a promising framework for unifying particle physics and gravity. The real measure of their success will be in facing up to the classic insurmountable difficulties of field theory and general relativity. What happened at the cosmic singularity? More generally, what are the specific signatures of string and M theory in realistic cosmological backgrounds? With growing interest in these questions, the conference will provide an opportunity to compare different approaches and stimulate new thinking.

On Saturday 26th of August, a special 60th birthday celebration will be held in honour of Gary Gibbons. There will be a day of talks by some of Gary's innumerable students and collaborators, followed by a special reception with buffet at a Cambridge college. Conference participants are automatically invited to this special event. People wishing to attend the Gary Gibbons birthday event only will need to pay a registration fee of 40 UK pounds, which includes lunch, tea and coffee, and the reception/buffet. Please complete the payment form and fax it to Cheryl Billington on (44) 1223 766883. A limited number of student rooms will be available for those requiring overnight accommodation, and requests should be made well in advance to Cheryl at cambridgetexas1@damtp.cam.ac.uk.

The conference will be held in the new Centre for Mathematical Sciences. Excellent facilities will be made available throughout the meeting to encourage ad hoc discussions and collaborations, and there will be an opportunity to present new ideas developed at the meeting. Accommodation will be provided in the outstanding and nearby Moller Centre. Cambridge is very pleasant at this time of year and there will be ample opportunity to enjoy its many attractions.

The registration fee is highly subsidised and is set at only 50 UK pounds, which includes six lunches, the conference banquet and the Gary Gibbons birthday celebration event. The standard conference accommodation package is available at a cost of 350 UK pounds, including seven nights subsidised accommodation with breakfast at the Moller Centre.
